Chan Hyeon Hur (Ph.D., University of South Carolina) is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Sport Management at Florida State University. Dr. Hur’s research sits at the intersection of sport management, economics, and public finance, organized around three lines of inquiry: the economic and social impacts of sport mega-events (e.g., real estate market effects, gentrification, and resident relocation surrounding Olympic Games); the economics of digital consumption in sport, including esports viewership and attention economics; and public finance and budgeting in collegiate athletics. Across these lines, he employs advanced econometric modeling, big data analytics, artificial intelligence, and geographic information system (GIS) methods to address questions of monetary valuation, performance prediction, and sport-related injury.
Dr. Hur’s work has been published in journals including European Sport Management Quarterly, Applied Economics, Sociology of Sport Journal, Public Performance & Management Review, International Journal of Sports Marketing and Sponsorship, and Managing Sport and Leisure, and he has delivered over 20 presentations at national and international conferences, including the North American Society for Sport Management (NASSM), the European Association for Sport Management (EASM), the European Sport Economics Association (ESEA), and the Eastern Economic Association (EEA). His research was named a top-three finalist for the ESMQ New Researcher Award by EASM, and he has received multiple external research grants, including the Janet B. Parks NASSM Research Grant and the NASSM Doctoral Student Research Grant.
Dr. Hur currently serves as Managing Editor of the Journal of Global Sport Management and as an editorial board member for Sport, Business and Management: An International Journal and Sport Economics Research. He is also a member of the North American Association of Sports Economists (NAASE). In the classroom, he teaches Sport Finance and has previously taught courses in computer applications for data management and analytics and introductory sport management, reaching hundreds of students across in-person and online formats. Before his doctoral studies, Dr. Hur gained applied experience at a professional volleyball club and the World Federation of United Nations Associations, bringing an international perspective to his research and teaching.
Dr. Hur earned his Ph.D. from the University of South Carolina and holds graduate and undergraduate degrees from Seoul National University and Korea University. Dr. Hur remains committed to research that informs economic decision-making, engages diverse communities, and advances economic and social outcomes in sport, urban, and public sectors.
