Florida State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Athletic Training (B.S. 4 years).
To become a certified athletic trainer (ATC), students would need to complete the bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training at FSU and then earn an accredited Master of Science Degree (M.S. 2 years) to be eligible to take the national Board of Certification Exam to become an ATC.

Admission Requirements
This is a specialized admission major; admission is competitive. Please contact the department directly for more information. Students should apply for admission to this program during sophomore year. Freshman, first-time in college students, are admitted as NFA-Athletic Training (not formally admitted). Continuing students undergo the specialized admission process, for upper division status in the major, at the end of their sophomore year. Transfer Students apply for a spring start at FSU to be able to enroll in ATR 1800 and undergo the specialized admission process.
Please note these steps to apply to the FSU B.S. Athletic Training Degree:
- Complete the pre- and co-requisite courses in order to enroll in ATR 1800-Intro to AT by the spring semester of your sophomore year
- Earn at least a 2.50 cumulative GPA at FSU.
- Meet with an academic advisor in Anne’s College.
Within the ATR 1800-Introduction to Athletic Training class, you will formally apply to the Athletic Training Degree and will choose one of the four pre-professional subplans to specialize in:
- Athletic Training - clinical rotations with athletes
- Pre-Physical Therapy - preparation for medical careers in physical therapy
- Pre-Physician Assistant - preparation for medical careers as a physician assistant
- Or Pre-Medicine (MD) - preparation for medical school and M.D. programs
The application portfolio includes completion of various content pieces including certifications, resumes, and interviews all contained within the course. Formal admission to the AT Degree is made at the end of the spring semester once per year. The AT Degree Program is a Specialized Admission (limited access) degree and requires a minimum of four semesters (not including summer). If you choose the AT subplan and are admitted, you will be assigned four clinical rotations with the athletes.

Students entering the athletic training program after Fall ’16 are required to complete a graduate professional athletic training program in order to become eligible for Board of Certification.
The Florida State University Athletic Training Program was accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Athletic Training Education (CAATE). (6850 Austin Center Blvd., Suite 100, Austin, TX 78731-3101) The program voluntarily withdrew its CAATE accreditation effective August 1, 2019.
