Dr. Bret Staudt Willet (he/him/his; last name: Staudt Willet) is an Associate Professor of Instructional Systems & Learning Technologies (ISLT) at Florida State University, the ISLT Ph.D. Director, and the Educational Research Catalyst for the FSU Innovation Hub.
 
Dr. Staudt Willet’s research investigates self-directed learning: how people figure things out on their own using emerging technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI), the internet, and games. He is most interested in what happens when students, learners, and trainees finish formal instruction, preparation, and training. He frequently explores self-directed learning using tools from educational data science, including learning analytics, social network analysis, natural language processing, and data mining. In short, Dr. Bret’s self-directed learning research explores how learners navigate digital spaces, social media platforms, and emerging technologies. His work addresses identity, agency, ethical concerns, and the application of data-driven methods, such as social network analysis and learning analytics, to understand educational phenomena.
 
Dr. Staudt Willet teaches courses such as Learning & Web Analytics (EME6356); Human Resource Development (ADE5083); Staff Training & Development (ADE5189); EME6665: Synthesis, Analysis, & Argumentation in Instructional Systems Research; and Applied Research Methods in Learning Design & Performance Technology (EDF5492)
 
Dr. Staudt Willet holds a Ph.D. in Educational Psychology & Educational Technology, a Master’s Degree in Educational Technology, and a Graduate Certificate in Serious Game Design & Research from Michigan State University.
