Human Development & Family Science (HDFS)

The Department of Human Development & Family Science (HDFS) offers a Master’s in Human Development & Family Science. The degree advances students for careers in higher education, government agencies, and businesses in the private sector.
Many students continue their education into a doctoral program. Others pursue careers in postsecondary education, public policy, and other organizations providing services to children and families. This is a non-clinical master’s degree and does not lead to licensure nor entry into the department’s doctoral Marriage and Family Therapy (MFT) program. For accredited MFT master’s programs, please visit the Commission on Accreditation for Marriage and Family Therapy Education (COAMFTE) website.
Our faculty specialize in several areas and work collaboratively with those in other disciplines. Thesis and non-thesis tracks are available; however, all students are admitted to the non-thesis track. After the first semester of study, you can request to switch to the thesis track. Students must be in good academic standing and consult with their major professor for final approval. The non-thesis student is required to complete a 3 credit hour capstone (a special project experience) in their last semester.
The M.S. degree can be accomplished in as little as 4 semesters.
Students can enroll in the Ph.D. program in Health and Human Sciences with a concentration in Human Development and Family Science directly following the completion of a bachelor’s degree. In this degree program students earn a M.S. in Human Development and Family Science as they progress toward a Ph.D. in Human Sciences with a concentration in Human Development and Family Science.
The master’s portion of this degree program requires 30 semester hours (including a special research project). The doctoral portion requires a minimum of 62 hours (including dissertation).
The total number of minimum credit hours for the M.S./Ph.D. is 92.
In the Human Development and Family Science (HDFS) Ph.D. program, we train students to become the next generation of scholars, university faculty, and researchers. Our graduates have successfully obtained positions of their choice in some of the nation’s leading academic institutions.
The HDFS curriculum addresses relational and family process in contemporary families, such as cohabiting couples, families of divorce and remarriage, military families, and foster families. Faculty are noted for their study of children’s friendships, couple dynamics, intimate partner violence, parenting practices, racial socialization, among other topics

Financial aid is a separate process from the admission to a graduate program.
You may directly contact graduate faculty members in your area of interest to determine availability regarding mentorship in internships, practicum, research and other hands-on experiences.
Before you submit your online application and pay the application fee, please carefully review the required documentation on the Application Process tab.
You may apply directly to the Human Development and Family Science Doctoral Program following completion of a related bachelor’s program. The MS portion of the degree program (thesis) must be completed concurrently. Students apply for dual enrollment in the HDFS master's during their second semester.

Doctoral students have access to the entire departmental faculty as part of their education and professional development. Students select their major professor and supervisory committee based on areas of scholarly interest and expertise. The doctoral supervisory committee provides mentorship throughout the doctoral experience. Doctoral students have access to computer laboratories, statistical software, and on-campus and remote access library resources.
For students admitted to a Doctoral program after completing a Master’s degree, a preliminary examination must be completed within 3 years but no longer than 5 years from beginning coursework.
When students complete coursework, they then complete a preliminary examination. Upon successful completion of the exam, the student enters into “candidacy,” where original research is undertaken, culminating in a dissertation. Although some students complete their dissertation within a year, others take longer. The period of candidacy is limited to 5 years.
We make every attempt to provide financial support to full-time enrolled students through Teaching Assistantships and Research Assistantships. Students typically provide 20 hours of service to the department through these assignments.
